A food visit to the Balestier area isn’t complete without a stop to whampoa market . Sometimes known as Whampoa Drive Food Centre, the huge complex is split into two blocks and a wet market, where you’ll be spoiled for choice by the variety of stalls. The “Morning Market” at Blk 91 serves the early birds, while Blk 90 next door only gets busy later in the day. But no matter the time of day you drop by, there’ll always be something open, even if it’s at 2am on a Sunday night (except when it's closed for cleaning, of course).

This guide focuses more on the hidden gems of Blk 90, where most of the stalls are open from late afternoon onwards, thus its other nickname as the “Night Market”.

Yet another duck rice store, Zan Ji sells roasted duck and kway chap sets for one person.



$3.50 gets you a plate of rice braised in the dark sauce, with a generous portion of duck. The braised sauce is the watery kind, giving a more herbal flavour to the dish.



The sambal chilli added a bit of welcome spice to tender duck meat that didn’t taste too gamey. The soup was a bit too salty, and they could definitely have turned down the dial on the salt.



The Kway Chap ($3.50) set is a bowl of kway swimming in a herbal broth and an individual portion of various meats like intestines, duck skin, egg, fish cake and braised tofu.



Another thoughtful note to all the kway chap eaters: their intestines here are cleaned very well, and are cooked separately from their other meats to keep them nice and chewy.
